Guillermo Rozenthuler Quartet – Tonight – 17th November

November 17th, 2009. Published under Jazz in Cambridge. No Comments.

“…Eclectic Argentine singer plays contemporary South-American music.”

Guillermo Rozenthuler Quartet - Tonight in Cambridge

Everybody has heard of Argentine Tango, but very little is known about Argentina’s – and South America’s “other music”. Guillermo’s repertoire combines Amerindian folkloric rhythms such as chacarera and huayno from Argentina, candombe from Uruguay, lando from Afro-Peru and Brazilian samba and baiao with elements of jazz improvisation. booknowsmallHis debut album, “The Blue Hour”, was recorded during one of his trips back to his native Buenos Aires with a trio of local musicians and led to the creation of his project in the UK, Rioplatenses, featuring fellow Argentinian Javier Fioramonti on Bass, Uruguayan percussionist Andres Ticino and UK’s John Turville on Piano. Some of their recent performance highlights are WOMAD festival, BBC World On Your Street, London Diaspora Music Village Festival and the South Bank Festival.

Now based in London, Guillermo is the singer with outstanding Saxophonist Gilad Atzmon’s Orient House Ensemble, winning a BBC Jazz award for best album in 2003. Their most recent album, “Musik”, was hailed “Best Jazz album of the Year” by Time Out. He is also one of the leading voices of tango in the UK, working regularly with Los Mareados tango band and Danish trio Copenaires.

Tonight they will be performing material from their live album, “A Route to the Roots”. Expect Foot-tapping chacareras and candombes, evocative zambas and chamames, and to top it up, of course, their unique take on traditional Tango.

“Guillermo has that star quality” - Sheila Jordan

“Guillermo has rocked me with his amazing swinging versatility. A true World Music journey!”Mark Murphy

“A journey through unexplored zones of the exciting musical landscape of South America” - J Lewis Time Out

Catch a Latin vibe without a Latin cliché in sight”J Fordham, Jazz UK

Alimentum named the UK’s top independent restaurant

Alimentum named the UK’s top independent restaurant at the RSPCA Good Business Awards 2009

Former Caterer Adopted Business Alimentum has been named the UK’s top Independent Restaurant of 2009 at the RSPCA Good Business Awards which recognize ethical business approaches to animal welfare.

John HudgellThe Cambridge-based restaurant, which received the Innovation Award at last year’s awards, was described this year by judge and food writer Richard Johnson as “standing out like a beacon”.

Speaking about Alimentum, Richard said “It continues to use free range animal bones in all its stocks, and organic meat that is reared to higher welfare standards”.

Companies entering the restaurant category, supported by Caterersearch.com, were judged on the basis of their practices in welfare of beef cattle, dairy cattle, poultry, pigs, sheep and farmed fish; live transport of animals; welfare at slaughter/killing; labelling; import of meat and eggs from other countries; and inspection of suppliers.

“Each year the standard of entries gets higher as more and more restaurants and pubs realise that customers want ethically-sourced food,” said Johnson.

David Bowles, head of external affairs for the RSPCA said: “Our restaurant and pub winners have set a high standard of Good Business practice for the industry to follow that they should be commended for. We are delighted to present the winners with these RSPCA Good Business Awards, and hope that they continue to innovate and motivate the rest of the industry to adopt good animal welfare policies.”

Among other things, Alimentum ensures that all meat used in the restaurant is from local farms visited by owner John Hudgell himself (below), and the team. All fish is sustainable and organic and locally grown produce is used wherever possible. The restaurant was also the first venue in the UK to source and serve ethical foie gras (as featured on Gordon Ramsay’s The F Word).

Observer Food Awards

November 5th, 2009. Published under Best Restaurants in Cambridge, Ethical Restaurants. No Comments.

Restaurant Alimentum in Cambridge, renowned for its affordable, ethical, award-winning food was placed runner up in the prestigious Observer Food Monthly Best Restaurants in Great Britain Awards recently, joining The Fat Duck at Bray in the Southern area selections. Moro in London took the overall prize – as voted by readers of the Guardian / Observer titles.

The online review says simply “Gorgeous menus using organic and locally sourced produce.”

And in August The Sunday Telegraphs Jasper Gerard voted Alimentum one of his top 50 summer restaurants in the UK after dining at the restaurant in July

“…This French classic is rarely executed with much panache in England, but this is as delicious as I’ve tasted… there is plenty of gastro promise here and I heartily recommend it.”
- Jasper Gerard, The Telegraph

Speaking about the influential recognition the restaurant has achieved of late, owner John Hudgell commented “This is just superb recognition of all that we are striving to achieve at the restaurant. To be placed as a runner up alongside Heston Blumenthal and his team has made everyone here feel a little bit special – and rightly so! And Jasper Gerard doesn’t pull any punches either so we’re obviously doing lots of things right.
